Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Fillings

Does tooth filling hurt?

The filling process is usually painless. Your dentist will numb the area with a numbing gel and a local anesthetic such as lidocaine, so you won’t feel any pain.

How long does a dental filling last?

The lifespan of a dental filling depends on the material. Metal or gold fillings can last more than 20 years, while porcelain fillings usually last no more than 10 years. Composite fillings are popular but not as durable.

How soon can I eat after a filling?

You should avoid eating very hot or cold foods after having a filling. Dentists usually recommend waiting at least 2 hours before eating to avoid injuring your gums or cheeks that are still numb.

Can dental fillings cause problems?

Large fillings can weaken the tooth and if they fail, root canal treatment and crowns may be needed. In severe cases, the tooth may be lost if further decay occurs and the filling cannot be replaced.

Does dental filling have any side effects?

After getting a filling, you may experience mild sensitivity to temperature and sore gums, but these symptoms usually only last for a week or two.

How many types of dental filling materials are there?

Teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, silver amalgam (a mixture of mercury, silver, tin, zinc, and copper), or tooth-colored composite resin.

Can dental fillings go bad?

Yes, dental fillings can become damaged or worn over time, leading to leaks and further decay. This may require replacing the filling.

Can I drink coffee after having a filling?

During the first 24 to 48 hours, you should avoid drinking hot or cold beverages, including coffee, to ensure the filling is not affected.

Can fillings be an alternative to root canal treatment?

If the problem is only mild tooth decay, a filling may be sufficient. However, if the decay has affected the pulp, root canal treatment may be necessary.

Can I brush my teeth after a filling?

You can brush your teeth gently after a filling, but you should avoid the filling area for the first 24 hours to ensure you don't cause damage.
