1. Effects of mouth guard

Mouthguards, also known as mouth guards, play an important role in reducing the risk of oral and maxillofacial injuries during sports activities. These devices absorb impact forces, protecting teeth, gums, and surrounding soft tissues from direct impact damage.

Research shows that the use of mouthguards can significantly prevent oral injuries during sports participation, especially among children and adolescents. However, awareness and use of these devices is very low. A survey of 300 children aged 8 to 11 who played basketball found that only 30 knew about mouthguards, and only 3 (1% of the sample) actually used them during practice.

2. Types of mouth guards

There are three main types of mouthguards:

  1. Stock: This is the type of mouthguard that is available in standard sizes, and is usually the least expensive but also the least effective because it does not fit the specific oral structure of each person.
  2. Boil-and-bite: These are made from a material that can be shaped with heat. The user soaks the appliance in hot water to soften it, then places it in their mouth and bites it to form a shape that fits their teeth.
  3. Custom: This type of mouthguard is made specifically for each person based on their teeth. This type has the best fit and energy absorption.

For children and adolescents, semi-individual types of new generation mouthguards are considered the most suitable choice, as they can be adjusted repeatedly to accommodate changes in the jaw during growth.

3. How to maintain mouthguard

To maintain the protective effect and service life of the mouthguard, the following maintenance measures should be taken:

  1. Regular cleaning: Mouthguards should be cleaned before and after each use.
  2. Regular Checkups: You should see your dentist regularly to have your mouthguard checked and evaluated.
  3. Proper storage: When not in use, mouthguards should be stored in a separate, ventilated container to prevent bacteria growth.
  4. Replace as needed: If the mouthguard becomes worn, deformed or no longer fits properly, it should be replaced with a new one to ensure optimal protection.

Raising awareness of the importance of mouthguards in the community, especially in sports clubs and schools, is essential to reduce the risk of oral injuries in children and adolescents participating in sports activities.
