1. What is a dental crown? Structure of a porcelain dental crown
A dental crown is a Restoration fixed covering the entire tooth body to restore shape, function and cosmetic dentistry damaged. Porcelain crowns are usually made up of two main parts: an inner core (usually made of metal or porcelain) and an outer porcelain layer. The outer porcelain layer is designed to mimic the color and shape of a natural tooth.
2. What types of dental crowns are there?
2.1. Temporary crown
Temporary crowns are usually made of acrylic resin and are used to protect teeth while waiting for permanent crowns.
2.2. Stainless steel crowns
This type of crown is often used for baby teeth or permanent molars in children, has high durability but is limited in terms of aesthetics.
2.3. Metal crown
Metal crowns can be made from alloys such as gold, silver palladium, or nickel chrome. These crowns are durable but do not meet aesthetic requirements.
2.4. Porcelain – Titanium crown
Titanium ceramic crowns combine the durability of titanium with the aesthetics of ceramic, suitable for both front and back teeth.
2.5. Plastic crowns
Resin crowns are often used as temporary crowns or in cases where an economical solution is needed.
2.6. All-ceramic crowns
All-ceramic crowns are the most aesthetically pleasing, mimicking natural teeth almost perfectly. They are usually made from zirconia or lithium disilicate porcelain.
2.7. Cobalt Chrome Porcelain Crown
Cobalt Chrome porcelain crowns combine the durability of cobalt chrome alloy with the aesthetics of porcelain, suitable for both front and back teeth.
2.8. Precious metal porcelain crowns
Precious metal ceramic crowns use precious metals such as gold as the core, covered with ceramic on the outside. This type of crown is durable and aesthetically pleasing but expensive.
3. Why do we need dental crowns?
Dental crowns are indicated in many cases such as:
- Restore severely decayed or broken teeth
- Protect teeth after root canal treatment
- Improve the aesthetics of discolored or misshapen teeth
- Restore chewing function
- Make abutments for dental bridges.
4. How are dental crowns made?
The dental crown procedure typically includes the following steps:
- Examination and X-ray
- Tooth preparation: grinding the tooth to create space for the crown
- Take dental impressions
- Place temporary crown
- Dental crown fabrication in lab
- Try on and adjust the crown
- Fixed crown.
5. What problems can arise with porcelain crowns?
5.1. Discomfort or sensitivity
May occur in the first few days after crown placement, usually resolves on its own.
5.2. Chipped crown
Can be caused by trauma or eating hard foods. Depending on the severity of the chip, it can be repaired or replaced.
5.3. Loose crown
Because the crown cement is loose, it should be re-cemented as soon as possible.
5.4. Crown falls out
Similar to a loose crown, it should be reattached immediately to avoid damage to the tooth.
5.5. Allergy symptoms
Rarely, can occur with certain metals in dental crowns.
5.6. Dark border on the gingival margin of a crowned tooth
Can happen with metal-ceramic crowns, due to exposed metal at the neck of the tooth.
6. How long does a dental crown last?
The lifespan of a dental crown depends on many factors such as the type of material, the position of the tooth, chewing habits and oral hygiene. On average, a dental crown can last from 5 to 15 years. All-ceramic crowns and precious metal ceramic crowns can last up to 20 years or more if properly cared for.
7. Cost of dental crowns
The cost of dental crowns varies depending on the type of material, technique used, and location of the procedure. In Vietnam, the cost can range from a few hundred thousand VND for a temporary crown to several tens of millions of VND for a high-end all-ceramic crown.
